   "
Paul Perlmutter has a large circle of admirers. His extended family, colleagues and friends have long desired a book such as this to recall the seventy years with his muse and love of his life, Ruth Talbot. Although both Paul and Ruth spent their youths in Toledo, Ohio, they never met until 1929 in Greenwich Village where Ruth resided to further her art and writing aspirations. The Great Depression, prohibition, and the Village scene of the early 30s breathed adventure and romance into the lives of these two young artists.
In his young years Paul studied with Israel Abramofsky, John Sloan, Boardman Robinson, and later briefly with Hans Hofmann and Max Weber. He has won numerous awards and has exhibited in New York, Toledo, Bowling Green State University, Detroit, Providence, San Francisco, and Santa Barbara. He is represented in numerous private collections across the U.S. and in Canada. A painting was selected by a U.S. government art commission for an American embassy abroad,  and one hangs in the permanent collection of [the] Santa Barbara Public Library.

This comprehensive selection will be a legacy for family and friends and an introduction of Paul Perlmutter to the general public, most likely unaware of this humble and reluctant giant. Most importantly it is our gift to Paul who has shelves full of art books on the masters who have inspired him.

Paul, this one's for you."

The paintings were signed by Perlmutter, but their dates are not available. The two water scenes were near Walbridge Park. The third remains unnamed. The paintings were donated to THM by the artist's nephew, Trustee Edward Slack, who supplied the digital images, and also donated one book each to THM and to the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library Department of Local History & Genealogy.

In 1928 Paul Perlmutter, age eighteen, won first prize in oils at Toledo Art Museum's annual exhibition, for his painting of the biblical legend of "Susanna and the Elders." He later had a one-man show at the National Bank Building in downtown Toledo. Twice Paul received recognition in the "National Scholastic Magazine." His honorable mention for charcoal drawing was awarded by a jury consisting of Eugene Speicher, Robert Henri and John Sloan-later to become Paul's teacher at the New York Art Students League. After graduation the City of Toledo granted Paul a scholarship to study art-the first award of this kind ever given by the City. Encouraged by Abe (now also by his parents), he set out for New York City in 1929. (pg. 9)

"Paintings of Toledo Artist in Exhibition
Paintings by Paul Perlmutter, Toledo artist, are on display in Gallery 21 of the Toledo Museum of Art during the month of February,
Nineteen pictures which include oils and gouaches and one charming pencil sketch, provide a refreshing treat for the visitor. All works are painted in a free, forceful manner and represent a variety of subjects. A seascape, a landscape and a cityscape which hang side by side with as much comfortable neighborliness as such scenes in reality actually do. Of ocal interest, is a series of five small canvases, framed together, called Toledo Sketches.
The most outstanding characteristics of Perlmutter's work are his freedom of brushwork and joyous use of color. All of his studies display his unusual flair for composition." (Partial review excerpted from Toledo Times, February 10, 1946)
